Peter Lim (born 1953) is a Singaporean business magnate, entrepreneur, philanthropist and investor. Lim, who was one of Singapore’s leading stockbrokers, is now a private investor in sectors ranging from palm oil to medicine. In 2016, Forbes ranked him as the 11th richest person in Singapore with a net worth of US$2.4 billion.

As a philanthropist, Lim focuses on education and sports, his most high-profile project being a $10 million scholarship fund to nurture local sports talents.

Lim married Cherie Lim in 2003. He has two children, Kim and Kiat Lim, with ex-wife Venus Teo.

Early life

The son of a fishmonger, Lim and his seven siblings grew up in a two-bedroom government flat in the Bukit Ho Swee public housing estate.

Lim completed his secondary school education at the Raffles Institution. After National Service, he went to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia. To fund his university education, Lim worked part-time doing odd jobs as a taxi driver, cook and waiter. He graduated with a degree in accounting and finance and first worked as an accountant. He did some tax consultancy before going into stocks.

Born Peter Lim Eng Hock, he studied at the Ruffles Institution and graduated at the University of Western Australia with a degree in accounting. Nicknamed the “Remisier King,” he started as a stockbroker for mainly Indonesian clients. He became a full time investor in 1996 when he invested $10 million in Wilmar International, a palm oil producer. It now has an approximate value of $700 million. Also, he is the second-largest investor in FJ Benjamin, a fashion distributor in Singapore. Other interests include logistics and agri-business. He has shares in Chinese property developer Yanlord Land and British automaker McLaren.
