Lim Sung-Ki broke into the billionaire ranks in March 2016 after shares in his Hanmi Science soared in the previous year, due to sizable licensing deals with global pharmaceutical companies. Since then, however, Hanmi has experienced some set backs. Shares began to plunge in October 2016 due largely to delayed clinical trials and cancelled or amended contracts with multinationals Boehringer Ingelhem, Sanofi and Jansse. They have yet to rebound. Lim earned a pharmacy degree from Seoul’s Chung-Ang University in 1965. Eight years later, he opened a small pharmacy in Seoul bearing his name and changed it to Hanmi Pharmaceutical Industry that same year. Three months later, it launched its first product, an oral antibacterial power.
