Alexei Bogachev got his start as a customs broker in 1994. Within a few years, he owned a small bank and had a few stores in the Moscow area. He eventually bought a 25% stake in Sergey Galitsky’s retailer Tander, which later became Magnit, Russia’s biggest supermarket chain and cosmetics retailer. He reportedly still owns holds 3% of Magnit and invests heavily in Moscow real estate. He also operates greenhouses in Krasnodar region, where about 30 million roses are raised for sale annually. In 2016 Bogachev started preliminary work on a boutique hotel in Moscow downtown not far from the Kremlin and Conservatory.
