Early life
Cao was born in 1946 in Shanghai to a prominent and wealthy Fujian family. His family moved back to Fujian a year later due to the imminent takeover of Shanghai by the Communists.[4]
He is said to have about five years of formal education[5] and taught himself thousands of Chinese characters with a dictionary.[4]
He spent his formative years working in the family farm for survival. Cao said life was hard then, always going hungry. He found ways to make money by selling tobacco leaves to escape the impoverishment. The destitution taught him to work hard doing 16 hours days for more than two decades.[4]
Business career
In 1983 while working in a glass factory making glass for water meters, as a sales manager he saved enough money to buy out the factory.[4][6] He learnt of the Japanese coming to China to make cars in 1985 and decided to get into automotive glass. He benefited from China’s opening up by Deng Xiaoping. In 1987, he established the Fuyao Group and in 1993 listed the company on the securities exchange.[4]
His son now runs the company as chief executive while Cao retains the chairmanship.[4]
