Electrical engineer Rit Thirakomen’s MK Restaurant Group added 41 new restaurants in 2015, including its first in Laos, taking its total to 592. The chain, best known for its sukiyaki restaurants, where customers cook their own food in a hot pot on their table, reported flat revenues of $415 million last year amid a weak economy and increased competition. But Rit plans to continue expanding MK with 50 new restaurants likely to open in 2016.

It was founded by his late mother-in-law as a small Thai eatery in 1962. After co-founding a book publishing business in 1974, he took to the restaurant trade in 1987, spearheading, along with wife Yupin, the expansion into sukiyaki. Today it has more than 600 restaurants, including Japanese food chain Yayoi.
