Albert Shigaboutdinov co-owns and chairs the board of the TAIF Group, a large regional holding company with assets in the Republic of Tatarstan. The company is controlled by the top management and by billionaires Radik and Airat Shaimiev, the sons of Tartarstan’s first president, Mintimer Shaimiev. TAIF’s holdings include oil refineries, a gas station chain, chemical factories, power plants and construction companies. TAIF became a shareholder in most of its companies during Russia’s privatization in the mid-’90s. Shigaboutdinov’s son Ruslan also sits on TAIF’s board. In december 2016 TAIF bought 25% of Nizhnekamskneftehim, large petrochemical company, for $525 million.
